Cycling in Kathmandu is not for beginners, but it is less dangerous than it first appears. Riding allows you to see the city from a different angle, at a different pace. While the traffic on the main avenues is heavy, other streets are quieter, off the main tourist areas where you can see the real local life.
The itinerary not only runs through the city centre but also through the outskirts of Kathmandu. There, you can see its “residential” neighbourhoods, mixed with small orchards and larger farm areas. Some traditional brick houses survive the progressive expansion of the city. It is an unforgettable view of Kathmandu and its surroundings, with a direct insight into the way of life of its inhabitants beyond the tourist influence.
The centre of Kathmandu is fairly flat, but as you move away you encounter hills and valleys that involve some uphill and downhill riding. There are paved roads, unpaved roads, concrete, paths, highways, from quiet places to roads shared with trucks, buses, people, cows, dogs and potholes. We do not book a place to eat because we will all eat together somewhere along the route depending on our pace (not included).
The itinerary can vary according to your interests. For example:
– Visit the outstanding monuments of Kathmandu, such as Swayambhunath, Bouddha and Pashupatinath or even Patan (entrance fees not included).
– You can make a more extensive visit to other neighbourhoods of the city, the suburbs with rural areas, etc.
– Bhaktapur is not so far away and it is a good way to get there or even make it a two-day trip (entrance fee not included).
– An interesting route is to reach Budhanilkantha north of Kathmandu, with a figure of Vishnu lying in the middle of a pond.
– …. and many more options.
You will have a guide for the entire route and a second guide for groups of 6 or more. We provide you with everything you need, you only provide your legs, which is no small thing.
