The Imja Tse, better known by westerners – and also by the Nepalese – as Island Peak, is one of the classic climbings among hikers who also want to reach a Himalayan summit. With 6189 meters of altitude, it is within the list of the summits that are considered “trek summits”, that is to say, that can be ascended during a trek, are less than 7000 meters high, and a medium-low technical difficulty, being its ascent permit, also, more economical.
Island Peak is ascended from the settlement of Chukhung and the climb takes two days from there, to which it is advisable to add a spare day in case of bad weather or any other setback, as it’s already included in this program.
To get to Chukhung there are several options that you can choose and configure to your taste and preferences.
The “express route” would be to go directly from Lukla through Dingboche and make a couple or three days of acclimatization, as could be the Ama Dablam Base Camp and Chukhung-Ri.
However, our recommendation to do it in perfect acclimatization conditions when facing the Island Peak climb is to do the Everest Base Camp trek and then cross the Kongma-La pass, 5535 meters high, from Lobuche to Chukhung. Or even better, do all or part of the 3 Sagarmatha Passes trek clockwise, leaving the ascent of Island Peak as a beautiful icing on the cake of an incredible journey.

Flights to Lukla now operate mostly from Ramechhap airport. To get Ramechhap you must get a shuttle that leaves at 01:00 in the morning from Thamel and lasts about 5h30. So, this day, you must wait until we will pick you up about 00:30 in the hotel lobby to walk to shuttle departure point. If the flight leaves from Kathmandu you can rest comfortably at the hotel, although it is true that flights to Lukla from Kathmandu are more susceptible to cancellations due to weather reasons.
Important in the case of groups of two climbers with a single Sherpa: If on the day of the ascent to the summit one of the climbers cannot continue, both components must descend. As you understand, no one is left alone in the mountain. In case you have doubts about it, you can always choose to each get a Sherpa (extra cost).
In groups with more members, in the same case, normally one Sherpa would descend with the hiker to the High Camp and the rest would continue the ascent.
