Even though it is a short tour of Bhutan, we have combined the two elements that are perhaps most outstanding in the country. Its dzongs, monasteries, lhakhangs and gompas, that is, its religious and civil architecture in the Tibetan style, and its essentially rural nature between subtropical forests and alpine meadows with the Himalayas in the background. Adding to this the daily life of Thimphu and, as cannot be missed on any trip to Bhutan, the famous Taktsang temple, the Tiger’s Nest, perched on a rock wall above the Paro valley. All this with the friendly welcome that the Bhutanese will give you, where you will always feel welcome Joenpalegso!
And since the most logical way to access Bhutan is to do it through Nepal, there is nothing better than taking advantage and spending a few days visiting the three royal cities. Bhaktapur, small and quiet, with temples, squares and charming corners at every step. Patan, the beautiful Lalitpur, with its own atmosphere, different temples and small passages where you can get lost. And the great and hectic Kathmandu, with one of the most iconic Buddhist stupas in the world and the vitality of the whole area of Thamel.
BHUTAN
Druk-Yul is what the Druk-pa, the inhabitants of the “land of the thunder dragon,” call Bhutan, the emblem on their flag. It was one of the most isolated countries in the world until tourism was allowed in the 1970s, but there are still restricted areas of the country. This fact has preserved its traditions and culture from Western influence, while it has become the main attraction for tourists. And Bhutan has been able to take advantage of it with a good tourism organization and rates that are not suitable for all budgets.
Bhutan became famous for its GNH, the Gross National Happiness Index, as opposed to GDP (Gross Domestic Product), a concept they developed in the 1970s and included in the constitution. For the rulers of Bhutan, it does not make much sense to live and work just to produce more (GDP) but to live to be happier (GNH).
Lush forests and high peaks of the Himalayas in the north define a majestic landscape, almost undisturbed by the few existing roads, friendly and calm people will welcome the traveller who sets out on the road through the so-called last Shangri-la on earth.
NEPAL
Nepal is a country of contrasts. In the imagination of many people, Nepal is situated at a high altitude in the middle of the highest mountains in the world, but Nepal is a subtropical country, with large expanses of jungle and yes, also mountains, the highest on the planet, in a country that rises from 70 metres in the jungle to 8,848 metres on Everest in just 180 kilometres.
Considered one of the poor countries, tourism isthe country’s first industry, providing a good part of its wealth. A very complicated orography of deep valleys, fast-flowing rivers and high mountains make any infrastructure very expensive and difficult technically, adding that the monsoon every year is responsible for undoing part of what has been achieved with effort during the year.
The Kathmandu Valley stretches for several kilometres to the south and east. Its highlights are the pretty little town of Bhaktapur, one of the most important centres of Newar culture, full of buildings and temples made of red brick and carved wood. Patan, although linked to Kathmandu, is a city with its own personality, with a somewhat different atmosphere. And Kathmandu, the great metropolis known as “the city of temples”, dynamic and vital, heading a change in Nepal that has been gradually becoming apparent in recent years.
